The Nave

In parish churches this part of the building was the public part and the people of the village were responsible for its upkeep and maintenance. In the medieval period the nave, as now in Crowland, was an open space, usually without pews. This open space was used for religious processions and a variety of secular functions, such as markets. Eventually the secular functions were relocated to the churchyard resulting in pews and benches being installed to give greater comfort for parishioners. In many parish churches pews did not start to become a common feature until at least the 16th century.
